Personally I think you did, you have to make the most out of every day/month/year especially when it comes to game design the more you know the better and easier to get a job in that area. I've currently just started my education on game design seeing that I live one hour away for silicon valley there are more opportunities for that here. I'd suggest you do what I did, get a job part time or full, depends on your minimum wage over there here in California its $10 dollars an hour, get enough money to purchase a desktop that can handle coding/game design systems, preferably just build your own computer its cheaper and you get to hand pick what you want in your computer. Once you get that out of the way then purchase or download some coding programs and dabble on them in your own time, so when you apply for an actual game design school you can have a full grasp on it. And if a year passes and you change your mind about game design your left with a killer gaming desktop! ![]() |

well think of it this way, you may not have learned much about making video games, but you learned that you liked the coding aspect of it so at least next time you take a course you know to take one that focuses more on coding after high school i took a course to start becoming a truck mechanic, but even though i loved the class, after a while i started thinking that it's not rly something i'd want to do as a career. i've forgotten most of the stuff I learned, too, so it's not like i can even fix my own truck if i get one. however, i dont count it as wasted time at all. it gave me a year to think about what i want to do in life and learn more about myself as a person and i think if i went straight to uni after high school i would have dropped out by now |

It definitely sounds like the course you did wasted a lot of your time. However, you can't get that time back, so I think you should try and take as much from the wasted time as possible. You don't want to be wasting more time complaining. Take every positive possible from the past year. You've got a better idea of what you do and don't want to do...you have experience with a crappy course, so you have a better idea of what to look for next time, and you'll put more time into finding out about the actual courses etc. Also, and I know you commented a little later acknowledging this, but the social aspect is a big plus. It sounds like it gave you a confidence boost, and general experience of being in social situations by giving you regular reasons to get out of your room and talking to people. That's a big plus. And like you said, you're happier than you were this time last year, and really, that's all that matters. Who knows how happy/sad you would have been if things had worked out differently. What you do know is how things did work out, and you're happier, so that's a good thing. |

"Then you've got the chance to do better next time." "Next time?" "Course. Doing better next time. That's what life is." | |

I'm an advocate of independent learning. I'd probably say you should've spent your own time learning the things you wanted, but I also think that teachers should be competent enough to be able to direct and guide you properly -- and it doesn't seem like they were from the sounds of it. As for it being a waste of time: I don't think most things are a waste of time. Surely there's something you may have learned whether it's to do with your course or not... like knowing when to complain if your teachers are s*** if you ever end up on a s*** course again. |

You shouldn't see as anything you did as a waste of life because that will just lead to you feeling regret. What is done is done, and you should try to take the positives that you got out of it. I feel like you did essentially do something productive by attending the classes and getting the social environment that you talked about. I remember you telling me how you wished you had more of a social life. Even if nobody talked to you, you still got out of the house and did something to pass the time. With that being said, I am a firm believer that you should always start what you finished. I'm not telling you that you were wrong for doing what you did or that you should go back. However, that's just how I see it. As long as you're happy with the decision, that is what matters. Edited by Pookie, Sep 16 2013, 03:24 PM.
